The FCC has adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that seeks to update outdated spectrum sharing rules among different types of satellite systems to enable more intensive use of spectrum for space activities.  Specifically, the FCC proposes to update power restrictions for the use of satellite frequencies (Ku- and Ka- bands) that support next generation satellite broadband constellations in low-earth orbit.  This rulemaking was spurred by a Petition for Rulemaking filed by SpaceX that sought FCC review of the NGSO-GSO sharing regime in downlink frequency bands that are subject to certain power limits.
