The FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) and Space Bureau released a Public Notice waiving FCC rules to permit more devices to use Supplemental Coverage from Space (SCS) services. Now, end-user devices not authorized for SCS use under part 25 of the FCC’s rules may be used to connect with SCS services for one year. This waiver expands on the previous waivers granted to allow these devices to be used with SpaceX and AST & Science, and will enable them to freely connect with SCS services through other providers. The temporary waiver applies only to devices otherwise authorized for use on or before June 29, 2024, excludes any equipment on the FCC’s Covered List, and will sunset once the FCC acts on its pending proposal to eliminate the SCS equipment certification requirement altogether.
