The FCC has adopted new rules to help ensure that Next Generation 911 (NG911) networks are reliable and interoperable as networks around the country transition to all Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications. In its Second Report and Order and Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, the FCC adopted changes to expand the definition of covered 911 service providers, update NG911 reliability standards for IP-based 911 networks to include best practices, improve NG911 interoperability requirements, streamline providers’ certification process, and enhance NG911 oversight. Additionally, the FCC seeks comment on adopting new interstate interoperability testing requirements and how to integrate advanced video calling into NG911 networks.
