The Federal Communications Commission has adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing to eliminate legacy interconnection obligations for incumbent local exchange carriers under Section 251(c)(2) and (c)(6) of the Communications Act by December 31, 2028.  The FCC believes this will help accelerate the transition to all IP networks for voice services.  The Commission also seeks comment on whether eliminating these obligations will affect other regulatory frameworks and whether the FCC should revisit any other provisions or rules that are rendered redundant by the elimination of these obligations.  Comment deadlines on the NPRM have not yet been set.
