The FCC has issued an alert warning consumers to beware of scam calls and texts from fraudsters posing as FCC Commissioners and employees. The FCC identified a recent scheme in which impersonators, posing as FCC Commissioners and employees, are contacting consumers and falsely claiming the phone number is under investigation for criminal activity.
In its alert, the FCC reminded consumers that it will never (1) call to say your phone number is under investigation, (2) direct anyone to a special “law enforcement hotline,” and/or (3) demand payment, personal or financial information or threaten legal action. The FCC also highlighted its online complaint form for imposter scams and its recent enforcement actions and strategy to combat such scams.
