FCC Adopts NPRM to Improve EAS and WEA Security

The FCC has adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing rules to bolster security of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs).  Among multiple proposals, the FCC seeks comment on: (1) requiring EAS participants to report incidents of unauthorized access within 72 hours; (2) requiring EAS participants and wireless providers delivering WEAs to annually certify that they have a cybersecurity risk management plan in place; and (3) requiring wireless providers to transmit sufficient authentication information to ensure validity of alerts on consumer devices.
