The FCC released a Report and Order, which eliminated the requirement that traditional, Text Telephone (TTY)-based telecommunications relay services (TRS) be capable of communicating in the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format. In 1991, the FCC required TTY-based devices to be capable of communicating in the Baudot and ASCII coding formats. The Commission stated that by removing this “outdated regulatory mandate,” it is relieving TRS providers of the obligation to maintain costly and obsolete ASCII-compatible hardware and software systems.
