FCC Grants Rural ISPs Temporary Access to 5.9 GHz Spectrum

The FCC has announced that the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (WTB) has granted temporary spectrum access to 33 wireless Internet service providers (WISPs) serving 300 counties in 29 states to help them serve rural communities facing an increase in broadband needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Specifically, the WTB has granted Special Temporary Authority (STA) so that the WISPs can use the lower 45 megahertz of spectrum in the 5.9 GHz Band for a period of 60 days.
