The FCC has adopted a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking proposing to require originating service providers to deliver next generation (NG) 911-capable calls that can support new capabilities such as text, video, and data.  State and local 911 authorities have begun transitioning to NG911 technology by replacing the legacy circuit-switched 911 networks with IP-based networks and applications.

Previously, the Commission proposed to require that wireless providers deliver NG911-capable calls.  In this adopted NPRM, the FCC proposes to require other originating service providers, such as wireline, interconnected VoIP, and internet-based TRS providers, to deliver NG911-capable calls.  The NPRM also seeks comment on the allocation of costs for transmitting such NG911 calls.

Comments are due 30 days after the NPRM’s publication in the Federal Register, which has not yet occurred, and reply comments are due 60 days after Federal Register publication.
