Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) introduced the Telecommunications and Cybersecurity and Resilience Act, which aims to address cybersecurity vulnerabilities that the Salt Typhoon cyberattack and other incidents exposed. The legislation would create a telecom cybersecurity working group comprised of representatives from the FCC, federal, state and local government agencies, and cybersecurity experts and companies. The working group would develop industry best practices, including adoption instructions and materials. The working group would also have to update the best practices and other materials at least once every two years and major cyber incidents. The bill would also create a voluntary cybersecurity certification for telecom companies that use the working group’s best practices.
