The FCC adopted a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FNPRM) to expanding the use of unlicensed devices in the 6 GHz band.  The Order allows geofenced variable power (GVP) devices to operate in the 6 GHz band, which could be used for “reality/virtual reality, short range hotspots, automation process, and indoor location and navigation” operating at higher power than allowed under the old rules. The move is expected to drive the grown of devices using the Internet of Things and virtual and augmented reality. The FNPRM seeks comment on several proposals to enhance the use of unlicensed devices in the 6 GHz band, including to allow some low power indoor devices to operate with additional power and permit such devices to operate on cruise ships.
